Charism

The Jesuits are called to “find God in all things” and serve the Church through education, missionary work, intellectual apostolate, spiritual direction, and social justice, while living a life of poverty, chastity, obedience, and a special vow of obedience to the Pope regarding mission. They emphasize discernment, spiritual exercises, and apostolic flexibility to respond to the needs of the Church and the world.

Short History

The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 in Paris, France, by St. Ignatius of Loyola and a small group of companions, following the approval of Pope Paul III. The founding aim was to serve the Church through missionary work, education, and spiritual formation, particularly during the challenges of the Protestant Reformation. Early Jesuits spread rapidly across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, founding schools, colleges, and missions.
Over the centuries, the Jesuits became known for their educational institutions, missionary outreach, and intellectual contributions, including the establishment of universities and seminaries worldwide. Today, the Society of Jesus operates in over 100 countries, engaging in pastoral ministry, education, social justice initiatives, spiritual direction, and global advocacy, always guided by the motto “Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam” (For the Greater Glory of God).
