Main Stream: Compassionists
The charism of the Missionaries of Compassion is to be a visible presence of Christ’s compassionate love, serving the poor, the sick, the destitute, and the marginalized through direct ministry and solidarity with those most in need. Inspired by the compassionate ministry of Jesus, the priests of this society aim to alleviate human suffering, restore dignity, and share God’s love in practical, transformative ways through pastoral care, health and social services, education, and evangelization. Their mission reflects a deep commitment to respond to human need with Christ-like mercy and compassion, especially for those suffering poverty and exclusion.
The Missionaries of Compassion were founded on 24 May 2003 in the Archdiocese of Hyderabad, India, by Rev. Dr. Jose Kaimlett as a clerical society dedicated to bringing Christ’s compassionate ministry to people in suffering and poverty. Rooted in Catholic apostolic life, the society expanded rapidly beyond India. In 2017, the Missionaries of Compassion came to Tanzania at the invitation of the Catholic Diocese of Mahenge, embarking on pastoral and development work that includes parish community building, schools, health centres, and outreach to the abandoned, elderly, and poor.
