Charism

The charism of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales (commonly called the Fransalians) is rooted in the Salesian spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, emphasizing gentleness, humility, optimism, simplicity, availability, and apostolic zeal. Their primary call is to continue the mission of Christ and His Church by living the spirit and spirituality of St. Francis de Sales within a missionary community and in service to the world. This charism expresses itself in evangelization, renewal of Christian life, pioneering mission work overseas, and special dedication to education and formation, especially of the young.

Short History

The Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales were founded on 24 October 1838 in Annecy, France, by Servant of God Fr. Peter Marie Mermier in response to the spiritual needs of people after the French Revolution. Mermier’s vision — “to renew the faith and to rekindle the Christian spirit” — brought about a community of missionaries dedicated to preaching parish missions, evangelizing, and building Christian life in varied cultures. Over time, the congregation expanded internationally to serve on multiple continents. The MSFS came to Africa in 1988 and established the East Africa Province, working in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda through evangelization, education, social services, and pastoral ministry.
