Main Stream: Stigmatins
The charism of the Congregation of the Sacred Stigmata, commonly called the Stigmatines, is to be Apostolic Missionaries in the Service of Bishops, living out the love of Christ through preaching the Word of God, instruction of youth, pastoral evangelization, retreats, popular missions, and assistance in the formation of clergy. Rooted in the spirituality of their founder, St. Gaspar Bertoni, they seek to form communities of believers and serve the needs of the local Church wherever they are sent, combining missionary zeal with communion of life and collaboration with the hierarchy.
The Congregation of the Sacred Stigmata was founded on November 4, 1816, in Verona, Italy by Saint Gaspar Louis Bertoni, a priest deeply committed to prayer, catechesis, and pastoral care amidst the social upheavals of his time. The congregation received papal approval and developed into a Catholic clerical religious congregation of pontifical right whose members use the post‑nominal letters C.S.S.. Over the centuries, Stigmatines have spread globally, establishing missions and communities in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Europe, and have dedicated themselves to parish ministry, evangelization, pastoral formation, and the service of bishops and seminarians.
