Charism

Their charism is based on the spirituality of St. Thérèse of Lisieux — especially her “spiritual childhood,” which emphasizes: Love of God and neighbour with trust and simplicity Humility, mercy, and confidence in God’s providence. Evangelization through service, prayer, education and care for all, especially the poor and marginalized
This spirituality shapes their apostolates in education, pastoral ministry, health services, women & youth empowerment, and community development.

Short History

The congregation was founded on 13 December 1932 in Bukoba (Kagera Region, Tanzania) under the initiative of Bishop Burchard Huwiler (Missionaries of Africa / White Fathers), who wished to establish a local community of African women committed to evangelization and service.
Originally three local young women began religious formation, and from this beginning the congregation grew steadily. Today it is multinational and multitribal, with members from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda.
Over the decades, the Bathereza Sisters have expanded their ministries in education, pastoral work, health care, and social empowerment while remaining rooted in the spirituality inspired by St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus.
