Charism

The charism of the MCESM is rooted in the Heart of Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd, with a mission to: Proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all people, especially where the Church is not yet present. Their work integrates faith proclamation with practical service — embracing evangelization, spiritual formation, and human development.

Short History

The Missionary Congregation of the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary (MCESM) was founded on 8 December 1975 in Moroto Diocese (northern Uganda) by two Comboni Missionaries — Rt. Rev. Bishop Sixto Mazzoldi and Very Rev. Fr. John Marengoni.
Their first center was established in Morulem, Moroto Diocese, with the first members drawn from Tanzania and Uganda. The institute received approval of its constitutions from the Holy See, and over the years it expanded its formation houses and apostolates across East Africa. A novitiate once existed at Kilacha (Tanzania) and later centralized in Ongata Rongai, Kenya.
In 2025 the congregation celebrated its Golden Jubilee (50 years) of missionary service, reflecting on decades of growth in evangelization, education, healthcare, and social outreach.
Today MCESM serves in multiple African countries — including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, and beyond — and has been raised to a Pontifical Institute of Consecrated Life.
