Main Stream: Canossians
The charism of the Canossian Daughters of Charity is rooted in the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ crucified and in Mary, Mother of Charity at the foot of the Cross. They are called to make Jesus known and loved through humble, joyful, and self-giving service to the poorest and most vulnerable.
The Canossian Daughters of Charity were founded on 8 May 1808 in Verona, Italy by St. Magdalene of Canossa (1774–1835), in response to a deep love for the poor and a desire to serve God through works of charity. The name “Canossian” comes from her family name (di Canossa), which became associated with her followers.
Canossian Sisters. From their beginnings, the sisters devoted themselves to education, evangelization, and care for the sick and marginalized. Their missionary outreach expanded over the 19th and 20th centuries to many continents.
