Main Stream: Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit Sisters live their vocation by bearing witness to Christ through missionary work and community life, guided by the Holy Spirit. Their charism is to make Christ’s incarnate love known and alive in all spheres of life, helping the Church renew itself by being Spirit-filled witnesses of service, education, health care, pastoral ministry, and social upliftment in the communities they serve.
The Holy Spirit Sisters were founded in September 1964 in Tanzania (then East Africa) at the invitation of the late Bishop Joseph Kilasara, who asked Rev. Fr. Bernhard Bendel (Germany) to introduce a community of sisters to assist in evangelization and formation. Two sisters arrived in 1964 in the Moshi Diocese, where they began pastoral work, youth ministry, secretarial services, and community engagement, soon joined by indigenous Tanzanian women.
Over the decades the community expanded both within Tanzania and internationally. They established the Theological Pastoral Centre in 1967, health facilities, schools (including Magnificat Secondary School), pastoral and social ministries, expanded missions into Morogoro and Musoma dioceses, and continue education, health care, and pastoral outreach. Their mission is rooted in bringing Christ’s love through practical service, evangelization, empowerment of women and youth, and community formation.
