The charism of the ABSG is rooted in the Benedictine spirituality of “Ora et Labora” (prayer and work), which blends contemplative life with service to humanity under the guidance of the Rule of St. Benedict.
The African Benedictine Sisters of St. Gertrude are a congregation of Benedictine women religious in Tanzania, part of the broader Benedictine tradition rooted in the Rule of St. Benedict. Their monastery is located in Imiliwaha, Njombe Region, Tanzania.
This community was founded as part of the missionary expansion of Benedictine monastic life in East Africa. Over the years, the monastery became a center for contemplative Benedictine life and active service to the local Church through prayer and ministries of education, healthcare, and outreach to the rural poor. Today the sisters continue to live the Benedictine motto “Ora et Labora” (prayer and work), emphasizing a balanced life of communal prayer, work, study, and service in their region.
