The charism of the CDNK Sisters is “Simplicity and Readiness to do the will of God for His glory and for the salvation of humanity.”
This charism is lived out through holistic evangelization focused on the spiritual, social, educational, and physical dimensions of life. Key expressions include:
Evangelization and pastoral care — proclaiming the Gospel in word and deed; Education — operating primary, secondary, and vocational training schools; Healthcare and social services — caring for the sick, disabled, or marginalized; Orphan care and support for neglected children including those with disabilities; Community development and skills training — building self‑sufficiency among the poor.
Their motto — “Do all things for the glory of God and the salvation of His people” — expresses their missionary spirit.
The Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro (CDNK) were founded in 1931 in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi, Tanzania, on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro by Bishop Henry A. Gogarty, C.S.Sp. (Holy Ghost Fathers), who was inspired to support evangelization in East Africa.
Initially a diocesan congregation responding to local needs in evangelization, education, and health service, the community has grown significantly. Over the decades CDNK sisters have established schools, hospitals, orphanages, vocational centres, and other ministries in Tanzania (e.g., Moshi, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza) and expanded into other countries such as Kenya and Zambia, as well as serving abroad in places like Italy, England, and the United States.
Today the congregation counts hundreds of professed sisters serving in multiple apostolates locally and internationally.
