Main Stream: Bridgettines
The charism of the Bridgettine Sisters is rooted in a Christ-centered contemplative life focused on the mystery of salvation, particularly the Passion of Christ and deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Inspired by the visions and spiritual writings of St. Bridget, the sisters live a life of liturgical prayer, meditation on Scripture, and communal charity, seeking to glorify God and intercede for the Church and the world. Their spirituality is marked by fidelity to Christ the Savior, a strong Marian dimension, and a commitment to unity and reconciliation within the Body of Christ.
The Order of the Most Holy Savior was founded in 1346 in Vadstena, Sweden, by St. Bridget of Sweden, a mystic, reformer, and later co-patron saint of Europe. Originally conceived as a double monastery—with both nuns and priests living separately but within the same monastic structure—the order was officially approved by Pope Urban V in 1370. After the Reformation, the Bridgettine Order survived through renewal and reform, especially in Italy and Spain. In the 20th century, the Order experienced revival and adaptation, giving rise to both contemplative and active branches of Bridgettine Sisters, all united by the original Rule and spiritual heritage of St. Bridget. Today, Bridgettine communities are present in Europe, the Americas, and parts of Asia.
