Main Stream: St. Joseph's
The charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph is unity and reconciliation expressed through service, emphasizing the love of God and neighbor in everyday life. They are committed to education, healthcare, pastoral ministry, and social outreach, striving to reveal God’s presence in ordinary situations. Their spirituality highlights prayerful reflection, community life, and active engagement with society, making the mission of the Sisters deeply relational and attentive to the needs of the marginalized, especially women, children, and the poor.
The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in 1650 in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, by Bishop Cardinal de Mazarin and Jean-Pierre Medaille, a Jesuit priest, as a community of women dedicated to active service without enclosure. From the outset, they were innovative in combining a non-cloistered religious life with apostolic works, ministering in hospitals, schools, and homes of the needy. Following the French Revolution, the congregation spread internationally, giving rise to multiple provinces and autonomous congregations across Europe, North America, and later Africa. Today, the Sisters of St. Joseph continue to serve in education, healthcare, and social justice ministries worldwide, including communities in East Africa.
