Main Stream: Franciscans
The charism of the FMSM is missionary service inspired by the Gospel and the Franciscan spirit of poverty, humility, and simplicity. The sisters dedicate themselves to evangelization, education, healthcare, and social outreach, especially in underserved communities. Their Franciscan spirituality is expressed through a life of prayer, community living, and openness to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, allowing them to respond to the concrete needs of people in mission territories. They aim to be living witnesses of Christ’s love while bringing practical help and spiritual support to those they serve.
The congregation was founded in the 19th century in Europe as part of the broader Franciscan missionary expansion. Rooted in the Franciscan ideal of serving the marginalized, the FMSM sent sisters to missionary territories across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, often accompanying male missionaries. Over time, they established schools, hospitals, orphanages, and social programs, combining apostolic action with deep Franciscan prayer and simplicity. The congregation grew internationally, maintaining fidelity to their Franciscan heritage while adapting to local cultural contexts and social needs.
