Charism

The charism of the FSJ is humble service to God and neighbor, modeled on St. Joseph’s example of quiet devotion and practical care. Sisters live in community life, balancing prayer, contemplation, and active ministry. Their apostolate includes education, healthcare, social services, and pastoral work, focusing on the needs of the poor and marginalized. Through their simplicity, humility, and dedication, they strive to reveal God’s presence in ordinary life, making service and prayer inseparable aspects of their vocation.

Short History

The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph trace their origins to the 17th–18th century in Europe, emerging from Franciscan tertiary communities devoted to active apostolic service. The congregation grew in response to local needs for education, healthcare, and pastoral outreach, eventually establishing autonomous communities across Europe. Over time, some branches expanded their mission internationally, including Africa, where they continue to serve in schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions while preserving their Franciscan spiritual heritage.
