Charism

The charism of the FMSA is missionary service and evangelization in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, lived through humility, simplicity, and fraternity. Their vocation emphasizes education, healthcare, pastoral work, and social outreach to underserved communities, particularly in Africa. Sisters combine prayer, community life, and active apostolate, offering their lives in service to those in need while witnessing Franciscan values through compassionate presence and practical support.

Short History

The congregation was founded in the 19th century in Europe to support missionary efforts in Africa, inspired by the Franciscan commitment to serve the poor and marginalized. The FMSA sisters were among the first female religious missionaries in several African regions, establishing schools, clinics, and parishes, often accompanying male Franciscan missionaries. Over time, they expanded internationally but have maintained a primary focus on Africa, fostering education, healthcare, and pastoral development. Today, the FMSA continue to serve across multiple African countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and others, remaining faithful to their Franciscan and missionary heritage.
