Charism

The charism of the FSM is compassionate service to the sick, poor, and marginalized, inspired by the Franciscan ideals of humility, simplicity, and fraternity. Sisters live in community, combining prayer, Eucharistic devotion, and active ministry. Their apostolic work emphasizes healthcare, education, and pastoral care, aiming to bring Christ’s healing presence to those in need while witnessing Franciscan spirituality in daily life.

Short History

The Franciscan Sisters of Mary were founded in the 19th century in Europe, emerging from Franciscan tertiary communities committed to active service in hospitals and schools. Responding to the social and medical needs of the time, the congregation expanded internationally, including North America, Asia, and Africa. In East Africa, they established healthcare institutions, schools, and social services, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania. Their work continues to integrate Franciscan spirituality with practical service, maintaining fidelity to their founding mission.
