Charism

The charism of the Sisters of Charity is service to the poor, sick, and oppressed, inspired by St. Vincent de Paul. They combine prayer, community life, and active ministry, focusing on education, healthcare, pastoral care, and social outreach. Their spirituality emphasizes compassion, humility, and practical charity, offering the love of Christ through concrete acts of service and dedication to the most vulnerable in society.

Short History

The congregation traces its roots to the 17th century in France, when St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac organized communities of women to serve the poor in hospitals, homes, and the streets. Unlike cloistered orders, the Sisters of Charity were active in society, combining structured religious life with practical service. Over time, they expanded internationally, establishing missions in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa. In Africa, including Tanzania, they continue to serve in healthcare, education, and pastoral ministries, maintaining fidelity to their founding mission of compassionate service.
