Charism

The charism of the RGS is mercy and rehabilitation for women and girls in vulnerable situations, inspired by the image of Christ as the Good Shepherd. Sisters combine prayer, community life, and active apostolate, focusing on education, social work, pastoral care, and rehabilitation programs. Their spirituality emphasizes compassion, justice, and protection of the marginalized, providing holistic care for those struggling with poverty, abuse, or social exclusion.

Short History

The congregation was founded in 1835 in Angers, France, by St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, in response to the plight of abandoned, marginalized, or “fallen” women. From the beginning, the Good Shepherd Sisters combined contemplative prayer with active service, establishing homes, schools, and rehabilitation centers. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, the congregation expanded internationally, including Africa, where they established programs for women and children in need, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania, continuing their mission of mercy and social transformation.
