Main Stream: Sacred Heart
The charism of the RSCJ is education and formation in the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, fostering holistic development of individuals, especially children and youth. Sisters combine prayer, community life, and active ministry, striving to cultivate moral, intellectual, and spiritual growth. Their spirituality emphasizes compassion, devotion, and service, integrating faith with concrete works of charity and guidance to form responsible and spiritually grounded members of society.
The congregation was founded in 1800 in France by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, in the aftermath of the French Revolution, to respond to the educational needs of children, especially girls. The Sisters established schools, boarding houses, and social programs across Europe. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, the congregation expanded internationally, including to Africa, where they continue to run schools, catechetical programs, and social outreach initiatives in Kenya and Tanzania, maintaining their mission of integrating education with Christian values and devotion to the Sacred Heart.
