Main Stream: Charity
The charism of the SCL is service to the marginalized, particularly through education and healthcare, inspired by the example of St. Louis and the Gospel call to charity. Sisters combine prayer, community life, and apostolic work, focusing on the holistic development of children, youth, and vulnerable adults. Their spirituality emphasizes humility, simplicity, and practical love, aiming to transform lives through education, care, and pastoral guidance.
The congregation was founded in 1842 in France by Fr. Jean-Baptiste Etienne, in response to the needs for education and care for the poor. The sisters began with schools and orphanages, later expanding to healthcare and social services. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, the congregation spread internationally, including Africa, where they serve in Kenya and Tanzania, continuing their mission of education, healthcare, and charity while preserving their spiritual heritage of humility and service.
